I was surprised and dismayed to read The New Zealand Herald reviewer's mixed and ultimately mean-spirited critique of My Name Is Gary Cooper in Monday's edition.
I enjoyed the play unreservedly.
To my mind, each character's arc was well defined and well delivered: the performances were hilarious, affecting and near-perfect. But I guess one person's pork is another's poison, so we'll just chalk that up to creative differences.
However, I am disappointed that the play's most surprising and powerful story points have been so thoroughly blown by the review.
Love the play, hate the play: that is the critic's right. But to destroy the story surprises for future audiences smacks of unprofessionalism.
There are, I'm sure, many plays that merit being put out of their - and the audience's - misery after opening night, but this entertaining, compelling and multi-layered work is not one of them.
