Raymond Hawthorne


Raymond trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London from 1957 to 1959. Prior to this he worked with the NZ Players under the direction of Richard Campion. From 1959 to 1971 he worked throughout the UK as an actor, singer, director and teacher, returning frequently to RADA to teach and direct. In 1971 he returned to NZ to work at the Mercury Theatre under then Director Anthony Richardson. In 1973 he formed Theatre Corporate of which he was Director until 1981. In 1981 Raymond was appointed Director of the National Opera of NZ. From 1985 to 1992 he was Artistic Director at the Mercury Theatre. Since 1992 he has been a freelance director, teacher and actor, working with opera and theatre companies throughout NZ. He currently runs The Actor’s Space and holds the position of Head of Major in Directing and Writing at the School of Performing and Screen Arts, UNITEC. For ATC Raymond directed Angels In America, Lovelock’s Dream Run, Three Tall Women and The Herbal Bed and performed in Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me, Oleanna, and Travels With My Aunt.
