Under the Mountain

By Maurice Gee, Adapted by Pip Hall

7 FEB - 21 FEB 2018 — Auckland Theatre Company

Auckland Theatre Company

ASB Waterfront Theatre

“Didn’t you see Mr Wilberforce changing? He’s not human and we’ve seen too much!”

Rachel and Theo are twins. Apart from having red hair, there’s nothing remarkable about them. Except their psychic powers. These are soon enlisted by Jones, a wise alien out to save the universe from the Wilberforces, a race of giant creatures waking from a spellbound sleep beneath Auckland’s extinct volcanoes, whose sole goal is planetary destruction. Will Rachel and Theo learn to use their powers and overcome the pain it causes them before the Wilberforces wake up properly to destroy Auckland, and then the world?

Recipient of the Margaret Mahy Award, Maurice Gee is one of New Zealand’s best-loved writers. Under the Mountain was adapted for a 1981 television mini-series and a 2009 film. This New Zealand premiere production will be directed by Sara Brodie, whose spectacular stage skills were last seen in Auckland Theatre Company’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Enter a theatrical world of wonder, full of mystery, magic and master storytelling.

This is a must-see event suitable for everyone eight years and older.

Under the Mountain was commissioned by Auckland Theatre Company with support from the ATC Patrons.
