Misery

by William Goldman | Based on the Novel by Stephen King

She’s his number-one fan...

26 Jan – 20 Feb 2027

ASB Waterfront Theatre

From the King of Horror, Misery is the ultimate psychological thriller: a tense game of cat and mouse between reader and writer, nurse and patient, fan and celebrity.

Stephen King’s best-selling 1987 novel is adapted by Academy Award-winning screenwriter William Goldman into an edge-of-your-seat theatrical nail-biter, a battle of wits and wills. Two of New Zealand’s most recognisable actors, Michael Hurst ONZM and Morgana O’Reilly, play the roles made famous by James Caan and Kathy Bates on film.

As they unpick the rotten heart of a parasocial relationship, you can expect unpredictability, high-wire deceit and twisted expressions of devotion. When obsession devolves into possession and dependence twists into addiction, things go from bad to worse. And, in this isolated, snow-gripped cabin of 1987, there’s nowhere to run and nowhere to hide.

Begin the year with an ice-cold plunge into the twisted mind of Stephen King, brought to life by director Simon Bennett. This will be the ultimate antidote to the back-to-work blues.

“One of the greatest thrillers ever written.”

— The Guardian

“Hurst is undoubtedly at the height of his power.”

— Stuff (King Lear)

“As you would expect, O’Reilly is brilliant and dynamic.”
