Elinor and Marianne Dashwood are rudely evicted from their childhood home when their beloved father dies and their brother inherits everything. Their only route out of ruin is romance. But should heart or head rule who takes their hand? Will it be the daring Willoughby, the dependable Colonel Brandon or the disarmingly charming Edward Ferrars?
New Zealand playwright Penny Ashton has lovingly adapted Jane Austen’s classic novel with her trademark theatrical mischief. The result is a wry, rambunctious whirl, with all the wit and pathos of the original. An ensemble cast of six women will play all 24 of the colourful characters, from jovial Mrs Jennings to insufferable Fanny Dashwood. Directed by Margaret-Mary Hollins, expect plenty of frocks, a dose of feminism, a pinch of spice, a dash of hilarity and bold physical storytelling.
Whether you’re a devotee of Austen or not, you’ll find this play a worthy proposal for an evening of your time.
“Surely at some point we get to call Penny Ashton a national treasure? This is really a masterclass in adaptation.”
“Critically acclaimed director Margaret-Mary Hollins has built her reputation on theatrically adventurous and visually inventive work.”
