"If music be the food of love, play on"

After 5,700 ākonga from 90 schools saw Macbeth in 2026, Auckland Theatre Company returns with Twelfth Night.

Co-directed by Miriama McDowell (Ngāti Hine) and Katrina George (Malie Sāmoa, Pākehā), the production drops Shakespeare's tale of love, longing and mistaken identity into a glamorous modern-day Illyria, a dazzling South Pacific resort where the sun never stops shining and everyone is a little lonelier than they look.

It is Shakespeare's funniest play and also his loneliest, and it asks how much of yourself you can invent before you lose track of who you are.

Seeing Twelfth Night live supports learning in English and Drama from Years 7 to 13, from a first encounter with Shakespeare through to close text study and Elizabethan theatre. For seniors it gives ākonga a Shakespearean text to study closely and a professional production to respond to for their NCEA live performance work.

Advisory

Designed for ākonga in years 7-13

The best Shakespeare production I have ever seen, so much so that I am returning on Friday for round two.

Kaiako, Macbeth, 2026

The day ran like a well-oiled machine, from our buses to their seats and back again. Taking a large group is always a feat, but the energy ATC brought was electric.

Kaiako, Northcote College

I cannot stress how valuable it is to have a recording of the production. My ākonga could take in the performance without worrying they might miss something for their exam.

Kaiako, ATC Schools' Audience Survey 2026

They do everything they can to make these shows great learning experiences and really practical experiences for students who will be sitting External Exams or completing Internal Assessments. And if you ask for something they will try their best to provide it.

Dave Sheehan, Head of Drama, Saint Kentigern College
