Blind for most of her 41 years, Molly Sweeney consents to undergo a sight-restoring operation, as much for her husband Frank as herself. Always in search of new hobbyhorses, Frank enlists the services of the once-brilliant eye-surgeon Mr Rice to perform the operation. Her sight is regained, but overwhelmed by the barrage of images from her strange new universe, she struggles to distinguish reality from fantasy.
