Board of Directors

Call for Expressions of Interest

Entering its 30th year of operation, Auckland Theatre Company is seeking expressions of interest from passionate people to help shape and lead the company at governance level. Looking ahead to our next 30 years, we are reshaping to better represent Auckland today.

Known for presenting an annual subscription season of theatre, Auckland Theatre Company also presents an annual Creative Learning programme of education and youth arts opportunities, creates and participates in sector development initiatives, invests in the development of new scripted works for the stage, and supports development of emerging artists. In a small, under-resourced industry, Auckland Theatre Company is an outsized player, a major employer in the performing arts sector with a scale of operations bigger than most.

Buffeted and battered by the pandemic, we are as committed as ever to producing outstanding theatre, better reflecting our city, and to strengthening and growing the theatre sector. The Board is responsible for the governance of the Company as we achieve these aims within available resources.

The Board is seeking to fill two sector vacancies on the Board. These vacancies are specifically for people with live performing arts experience. Your artform doesn’t have to be theatre, what we want are people who bring skills, experience, and perspective. Importantly, we are striving to have a Board that reflects the diversity of communities that make up Auckland. We want to ensure different voices are heard around our Board table and encourage people from a diversity of ethnicity, experience, background, and community to apply.

Auckland Theatre Company is committed to centring te Tiriti o Waitangi in all we do. We are still working out what this means for our organisation. To be appointed to the Board, you must share our commitment to te Tiriti.

Time Commitment

The Board meets five times per year for half a day February to November, with a further annual strategy and planning workshop. Directors can also be appointed to Board Committees requiring additional meetings, attend Board meetings of related entities from time to time, attend one-off Board workshops, and attend opening night performances. As we chart our te Tiriti journey, an additional commitment to participate in training and development may be necessary.

Board members receive agenda papers a week in advance and need to be able to devote time to reading the material and preparing for the meeting. It is not unusual for additional papers to be distributed out of session for decision or discussion.

Meetings are typically in person at ASB Waterfront Theatre, Wynyard Quarter, or at our Studios in Balmoral.

Remuneration

Unpaid. All Directors give their time voluntarily.

Board members have access to complimentary tickets for our own shows and other ticketed public performances at ASB Waterfront Theatre.
